Hi folks, just discovered this board from a friend on freecycle. We're based in South Down, and having lived off the grid for a year or so in a converted truck, we've got a little old place that we've restored using mainly 'green' tech. Cottage uses sheeps wool insulation, lime hemp plasters, and predominantly recycled materials. All the timber is locally sourced. We heat and cook using wood, and are bringing some birch woodland into coppice to supply fuel for future years. The truck too is heated with wood, in a home made burner. We've some evac tube solar, and a small PV setup which together with a little wind turbine charges 900Ah of batteries, powering all the truck's (and soon most of the house too). In our previous parkup in Bangor we did a lot of timber building - a roundhouse and a couple of composting loos, and we're replicating a lot of that here too. Lots of plans for the future, and look forward to getting some inspiration from these forums. I'll go explore... cheers Steve

hello steve and welcome.
i thought i had posted a welcome to you a few days ago but who knows where it is.
i think i may have seen one of your pole lathes at the quarries permaculture farm near bangor - was this yours? we ran a solar workshop there a few years back - lovely folks.
the 47mm tubes are rated for 5L, so yes, you'll need another panel of 20 for your 200L tank.
all the best

Hi Steve,
I had a good read at your blog, really interesting. I'm not sure I could do what you've done (actually pretty sure I couldn't) but in the back of my mind I have this romantic notion that I'd really like to do the same sort of thing. Maybe some day I'll get the courage to buy a smallholding or woodland or something and leave the rat race :-)
If you ever have an open day at your place let me know, i'll be there.
Jim
