I just watched a thing on TV about a town in Ireland, Baltinglass, that uses all sorts of energy generating systems such as Hydro, Solar, Wind, etc. The energy generated is fed into a local 'Virtual' energy grid, known as a smart grid or cluster' and is then used by the local residents. I think they also had initiatives to help people insulate their homes.
Apart from the eco benefits and the more comfortable houses etc they said that in the town of about 5000 homes that they were keeping about €6,000,000 in the local community which would otherwise be spent on oil, gas, and electricity. This aspect alone seems to make the whole concept worthwhile.
I wonder if all of the local rural communities were to do something like this how much money would be kept in their own community and could be spent on the community itself.
The show was called Eco-Eye on RTE, it is a weekly programme, very interesting.
