i bought a 'spares or repair' marlec 910 mk2 wind charger on ebay. listing stated 'needs new brushes'. arrived yesterday. nothing wrong with brushes. the troubleshooting manual is good and led me quickly to the stator. stator winding resistance on the mk2 is meant to be 2 ohm. on this one however, when it was not open circuit it was 3.5-4 ohms, but mainly open circuit. there are 4 wires from the stator, 2 for power and 2 for the stator's thermostat wiring. the thermostat wiring, supposed to NC, seems also to be open. there are a few splits and cracks visible on the edge of the stator where the potting seems to have been forced open by either heat or corrosion. i removed the rotor cum alternator assembly and the previous pic is after i had pulled the back half of the rotor off the assembly, so the last pic is looking down on the rear of the stator, which is surreounded by the front half of the rotor. this pic is of the back half of the rotor. the black is the perm magnet. assume a similar one will be visible if i part the stator from the front part of the rotor. here's the main assembly. the axle you see in the very first pic normally comes through the port you see on the LHS of this photo, and mounts in the two prongs also visible here. the assmbly that sits between the base of the two prongs is the slip ring assembly (incl brushes), and the electrickery over to the right appears to be two solid state rectifiers. i must learn how to take better pictures. even though this is british made, the best description of how the thing works is on a spanish site (use google translate) www.monografias.com/trabajos82/aerogeneradores-generadores-electricidad-y-productores-agua/aerogeneradores-generadores-electricidad-y-productores-agua3.shtmlPROBLEM: The stator is nackered and they are no longer available for the 910-2. only the 910-3 (3 phase) stators are available. any ideas? Hello Cye Weigh it in for scrap or attempt to rewind the stator or buy some of the cheap PV panels(best bet) As you know we have wind turbines they are a great talking point but I am not sure they are cost effective(but they are nice to look at!)

thanks, i'm still looking at the middle option! scrap value=nil. value for money, certainly not at RRP or anywhere near that i agree, but, at say £100 for something robust that will produce a minimum of 100wh per 24 hrs in all but the stillest of days, light independent, well that may have some uses!
What is it caveman says about small wind gennies , "generates interest". good education value if you can plant one 10 yards from a primary school, get the young minds thinking!

Hi Cye,
Congrats on an interesting buy.
To be honest I know nothing about fixing these things, but I did recognise a few of the words you used :-)
In a previous life I could have taken it into the maintenance department at Shorts and had it fixed or at least a good idea on how to fix it. This gives me the idea that you could talk to someone from a company that works on this type of stuff, make it clear your working on a project and only looking for advice or 'free' help. You could talk to dealerships for air turbines, or companies that rewind motors, or electric forklift engineers etc.
If you could find someone who works at stuff like this as a hobby you'd be laughing, but the only ones I could think off are the likes of farm equipment fans and train engineers on the steam train in Larne, probably not the right technologies.
If you happen to see an electric motor out of a forklift on your travels let me know, I want one for a car conversion.

replacement stator (pologies for poor pic ) from marlec. lots of exposed/unencapsulated copper at the perimeter. some of the exposed wire had bunched out too, making the disk 7mm wide in some places, leaving no clearance between the magnets/rotor halves for future bearing wear. this one was sent back.
