Hi all,
I had an interesting chat with a client of mine recently, he is a mechanical engineer or something at the Agricultural college. We talked in general for a while about some of the intesting technology they are working with up there, bio fuels, gas from silage etc, coppice, wood chip boilers etc.
He then mentioned that he had been thinking about installing a new oil heating system, but the college had recently installed a big air source heat pump system in an office block. So he thought he would take a risk and try it himself. He bought a system off Ebay for about £500 and installed it (very easily he says) and is very impressed. He recons that he gets 4 times the energy out as electricity in, so he's pretty pleased with that. I think this was a system he put into an office or workshop or something so is only for space heating.
He is now thinking of connecting it up to PV panels to run it off grid, wouldn't that be cool.

jim, what was the guy's name BTW? i was talking to an engineering guy a few months back (name evades me) who had done precisely this. could be the same guy. he bought it from ebay but paid a local refrigeration aircon guy to gas it up (£50 installation).
there are two potential problems with the ASHP technology. As it gets cooler outside the efficiency drops and in some cases the things ice up, so generally better for moderate weather. Also, many of these devices are installed in lofts and noise can be a problem.
i would be interested in learning more though!

Hi Cye,
His name is Ivor Wallace, he works for AFBI(Agricultural Research) in Hilsborough I think. He is a client of ours, he was buying large 3 foot balloons with images of hawks on them for a team researching ways to scare birds out of barns :-) Hows that for unusual.
He did mention that it became less efficent at lower temperatures but I think he said it still produced heat into the negative numbers.
Didn't say anything about getting it gassed by someone, but we didn't really talk for very long about it. Didn't mention any noise issues either.
