We have a few acres of birch growing on cut over bog, that I initially thought wouldn't be much use, but have since found a good few people coppicing birch successfully and so have begun to tackle ours. We're planting another acre of woodland, so the forestry guy was out, and he persuaded us that it would be better to stick with SRC birch than to start putting in willow. Just in time for me to start getting stuck in, I discovered the 'Tales from the Wild Wood' series on BBC4, which is actually very good. Its here on iplayer - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ndkwq and is well worth a look.
