I was out in the wilds camping with my 7 year old son and we were treated to the best starry night I have seen in ages. We had a tiny telescope with us which was no use at all. When we got back home we searched the net to see how much it would cost to get/make something better. We came across this special offer from a UK company and will be ordering asap. They are offering a high quality 4" mirror and flat to make a Newtonian telescope for £40+p&p. I will be using a section of plastic pipe or a big poster tube for the body of the telescope. I will get the other bits of Ebay. Looking at the stars reminds me of just how small we really are. Here is the link in case anyone else would like to look up and feel small. www.galvoptics.fsnet.co.uk/telescope5.htmThe special offer is at the bottom of the page.

Update- they are sold out. The next batch will be ready in a week or so but I think they will be dearer.

Hi,
What size of tube do you need. If it is a fairly large diameter, say 8" and you want something pretty heavy then go to your local carpet shop and ask for the inner tube from a roll of carpet. Take a saw with you as these tubes are about 8 ft long and were too long to fit in my car. I did this and got 6 tubes for a project I was working on.
God Luck Jim

Jim, Sorry, I havn't been on board for a while. I have been doing stuff around the house (at last).
We got our mirrors yesterday. The primary mirror is 4" in diameter so it will fit into 110mm waste pipe. The focal length is 865mm. So the tube is less than a meter long. The last 75mm or so is turned sideways out to the eyepiece, so the whole thing is actually less than 800mm long. Search 'Newtonian' and 'Dobsonian' for plans and design ideas. I told the astronomers in work about the deal and a few of them bought mirrors. They said they are top quality. regards conor
