Use a piece of tape on a metal surface to stop your drill bit from skating all over the shop

must try that trick next time. i'd been using an automatic (spring loaded) punch but perhaps it's blunted over the years because it rarely stops the bit from wandering.
i once observed a legitimate safe cracker at work in banks in london many years ago, drilling through safe doors. he worked for the banks, cracking safes where the keys had been lost, etc., nothing untoward. he knew exactly where to drill as he carried a suitcase full of templates drawn on acetate for the various models of safe. anyway, i saw him squirting something out of a bottle every minute or so onto the bit tip and asked him what it was. he said it was plain old water, nearly as good as professional cutting fluid at minimising bit wear, and, unlike cutting fluid, wouldn't damage the carpet.
so if your bit or workpiece is getting hot, squirt a little water onto the drill point and into the pit being formed and it'll keep the bit cool and lengthen its cutting life.
