Hi Conor,
Belive it or not you picked two examples where I again have a 'thing', I hate people littering, it's just rude, and as for dogs, don't get me started on dogs :-)
Now don't get me wrong on my views about SUV's and for that matter other large vehicles (excepting of course the likes of hybrids etc), I think for most people for most of the time that they are wastefull and unnesseceary, however I think that it should be market forces that curtail them rather than the Government.
I think that we should accept (not necessairaly like) the fact that we will contine to use fossil fuels until they become uneconomic to produce, and I think that will be quite a while yet. In the meantime more and more people will start to switch to non fossil fuels which will extend the life expectancy of the fossil fuel supplies, I personally think that we will be using oil for hundreds of years, just in a much smaller way.
As you say we like to live on cheap abundant energy, this will be the target for future developments, there are many new developments coming through that will help to provide this, from battery technology, to fuel cells, heat pumps, smart design of buildings, wind power, solar panels, pv panels and the list goes on and on. My hope is that enough of this technology matures fast enough so that some bright spark dosn't bring up the nuclear soloution.
I feel that in the not too distant future we will be living in homes which are energy producers rather than consumers, that we will be using highly efficent, low/no pollution transportation and that we will be much closer to living a carbon neutral lifestyle. Of course there is always the possibility that it will all fall to pieces before we get to that point.
Anyway there isn't a lot we can do about it except to try to influence government policy, convert people to an eco point of view and to try to reduce our own energy/carbon footprint.
